Toolbarqueries.google.com Incorrect Security Certificate.

Every once in a while, ever since the last Firefox update, I have been getting a security certificate mismatch error from Firefox. Not sure if this is an issue with Firefox or with Google or with the Google toolbar. I am also not sure why it occurs randomly. And since it happens when I open a new tab and not with searches from the Google toolbar, why it occurs at all. And if Google is only supposed to be spying on me when I search since I have the "Send usage statistics to Google" box unchecked, does this mean that this option is not really an option?

The message goes something like this:

You haved attempted to establish connection with toolbarqueries.google.com. However the security certificate belongs to google.com….

Once it said I was trying to connect to tbn0.google.com.

I am used to this type of message when I login into various cPanel installations, since I use the IP and not the domain name. It’s not much of a pain, just interesting. And it has happened on multiple computer and on both Mac and PC. Anyone else having this issue?

Stephan, in Firefox’s Tools menu, you can find the Add-ons manager where you can disable any Firefox extensions. if you disable the Google Toolbar, do you still see this same message?

Sorry, I forgot to add, I don’t think this is a Firefox problem. I suspect that this is the Google Toolbar querying a Google server for page data, possibly to display the PageRank or something like that.

Yes, I am pretty sure it’s the Google toolbar. It must be happening to a lot of people, because I couldn’t find anything on it, so I posted this article. In five hours since I posted it, there is a virtual stream of queries from Google coming in with "tbn0.google.com" and "certificate". I don’t really need the toolbar. Other addons have replaced its functionality and done a better job of it. So I took it off. No messages so far.

I don’t think it’s related to the toolbar, as I’ve been getting something similar for the past few days. Whenever I do a Google Image Search (GIS), I get a similar, if not the same, error.

    Security Error: Domain Name Mismatch

You have attempted to establish a connectino with “tbn0.google.com”. However, the security certificate presented belongs to “www.google.com”. It is possible, though unlikely, that someone may be trying to intercept your communication with this webs site.

If you suspect the certificate shown does not belong to “tbn0.google.com”, please cancel the connection and notify the site administrator.

    Veiw Certificate, OK, Cancel

I hit cancel, and when I do, one or more thumbnails do not display. However, if I go forward a page and come back… or back a page and go forward, I usually do not get the error, and all thumbnails display correctly.

So… I have no idea, other than this is the first site that came up when I googled tbn0.google.com

Did anyone ever get to the bottom of this?

  • Stephan Miller says:

Nope. Who knows what is? Google is like the government now. They don’t have to have answers for what happens with their system. But then again I stopped looking once it stopped happening.

I have that checkbox disable too but the toolbar sends data every time I visit a page. I think they use this behavioral data in their ranking algorithm or something. To be honest I don’t know what that checkbox is supposed to disable

  • Stephan Miller says:

    Not sure either.

  • I’ve been getting those too!!!
