href="http://www.stephanmiller.com/enough-content-for-two-weeks-of-posts-from-bwe/">BWE. But a lot of these will be about new products and some will be based on sloppy but very complete notes I took at the sessions.

This was the first panel I attended at Blog World Expo and the speakers included John Chow, Brian Clark, Zac Johnson, Jim Kukral, Darren Rowse and Jeremy Shoemaker. Shoemoney was a little late and Jim Kukral had all of us in attendance tweet him that he sucked. Everyone laughed and some did. Hey, when do you get a chance to tell a top blogger he sucks.

About Adsense

It was a consensus. Adsense is webmaster welfare. Just about any other way of monetizing your site will make you more money. There was a time when you could make money with Google ads. It is not now.

When John Chow noticed the money he was making from Adsense drop, he offered up the slots that had Adsense to private advertisers for more than Adsense was giving him. And every slot was quickly filled and eventually he was making a lot more from private individuals than he ever could from Adsense.

About Ads

Another consensus is that for most blogs, any type of CPM ads don’t work. CPM ads are stone age technology and those that learn this are ahead of the game.

And for those of you who are impatient, here’s a lesson. Zac Johnson had no ads on his site for 10 months and now makes $6000 a month on referrals and ads on his site. He also mentioned that the one of the biggest mistakes he sees bloggers make is wasting the space in their header. Any area above the fold in your website is prime real estate and should be used accordingly

Darren Rowse said that you should monetize from day one and get your readers used to it.

Brian Clark said he makes $100,000 a month without any ads. He sells at Teaching Sells and DIYthemes and thats how he makes his money.

About Branding and Using Your Name

Brian Clark also said that he created CopyBlogger to be an independent brand that he could walk away from. But it backfired and his name is almost inseperable from the brand. John Chow said if he could start over, he would not have used his name as his brand.

They also mentioned “social proof”. Don’t show your subscriber count until you are proud to show it. If you show that you only have 10 subscribers, you will have a hard time getting subscribers. It is much better just to hide that until you have enough subscribers that it actually helps you get more.

Use Email

Everyone on the panel stressed the importance of email. Not very many people that will visit your site will even know what an RSS feed is, let alone use a feed reader. So you must make sure you have a way they can subscribe to your blog with their email address. Feedburner offers this and Aweber offers even better features.

I learned that the most profitable internet properties don’t look visibly monetized. In other words, you don’t have to make your blog look like the side of a city bus to make money.

About Affiliate Marketing

John Chow said that his #1 money maker was direct advertising but in time, he knows that affiliate marketing commissions will bypass that. He said that most people who use affiliate marketing do so wrongly. They use PPC to get one sale from one person and never contact that person again. He said you need to build a realtionship.

Brain Clark said that one way to build a relationship is to get them to sign up for a newsletter or a series of reports. He also said that using banners to promote affiliate products will not do much for you but it will give the products owner free branding. Not a win-win situation.

And Darren Rowse added that the best way to promote an affiliate product is to hit it from multiple angles. Instead of writing one post for a products, write four or more. Write one. Interview the author of the product for one. Create a video using the product for one. If you think about it, you can come up with lots of ways to promote a product.

And Zac Johnson said not to be fearful of the affiliate network. Ask for help when you need it. That’s what the affiliate manager is there for. And when you make money, they do.

It Is Work

Blogging is not a piece of cake. Darren Rowse spends 12 hours a day blogging. If you decided to blog because you thought it was easy money, you are wrong. It takes just as much work as any other job, but it’s yours. And that’s the difference.

What They Didn’t Know

I have said that I learned just as much from the questions asked as the answers given. And here is how. I was in the room with the top money making bloggers in the world. If something stumped them, that is definitely an area investigate. Two questions did:

Mobile Blogging

Contextual Affiliate Programs

These are both areas I have been investigating and with no answer, I know I am going in the right direction.

Related articles by Zemanta

Image via Wikipedia

MMO Blogs

My blog is number 53 on the top 100 Make Money Online blogs. It has hovered right that number for a while. Amazing, considering that I have neglected this blog a lot. The reason: I have other blogs and while this one talks of making money, it doesn’t really make money iteself. I wiped banners out here and went back to my roots in affiliate marketing, leaving this blog a journal of making money rather than a “buy this now so I can make money” blog.

I didn’t start making money on the internet as a blogger. Before that I was an affiliate marketer, which I still am. And that was after being a product developer and Ebay seller. I hid behind the scenes and made money promoting other people’s products. I was lucky to pull my head out of the sand long enough to notice that there were a lot of make money online blogs showing up all over the internet and I had to get in on it.

Before Blogging

One way I made money was build sites with whatever content I could find. Whether it be software listings, free articles or my own articles. I would link to landing page for products from the content. Finally, I would build links to the site.

Then I learned how to use Adwords. I found that if I knew the keywords from my efforts described above, I could build some really high returns on every dollar I spent in advertising.

And then I started blogging. I listened to blogging gurus about private ads this, widget ads that and tweaking your blog to get the most out of Adsense. And I tried this for a while. It didn’t work for me. It felt like I was a dollar waiting on a dime. I was spending three times as long to make 10% of the money. Believe me, with a blog that has lower traffic, affiliate marketing will take you farther. If you have John Chow traffic, you can do whatever you want. You are going to make money.

Where I am Going

So I figured I would go back to my two original money making methods, with a better platform for building a site, WordPress and more unique content, my own.

And the only advice on blogging I would be throwing out is a lot of the monetization mumbo jumbo. I would throw out the banners, the Adsense, and accept no money for posts. And I would diversify income through multiple affiliate programs.

Everything I learned about blogging I would keep and learn to use, because dependence on search engines alone is putting too many eggs in one basket.

I could use what I knew to build links manually to my site through article marketing, directory submission and the like. I could stay active in the niche I was in. And I could write great content that would get links.

The money comes into play when I would use this heavily linked content to channel the link juice back into product landing pages.

I would do this by importing the products into their own category with one of the CSV file import plugins I have seen floating around the net.

I would then set the similar posts plugin to pull only posts from this imported products category. And a keyword linking plugin to further link to the product pages.

Tracking will be a must. With search terms saved to use in the keyword linking plugin and Adwords campaigns. The key to using a blog for Adwords is to create a seperate page template for your landing pages. And with the landing page surrounded by a blog with unique related content, the landing page is bound to have a great quality score and cost less for clicks.

Putting the Brakes on Development

And I wanted a control center and more automation. And this is where the issue comes in, because I will spend a lot of time chasing an initial goal when I could have been a step closer to the real goal, which is making a bit more money online.

Instead of trying to trim seconds through automation, I needed to realize that the part that takes the most time, the writing, I will still be doing myself for a while and saving a few seconds on checking sales or monetizing a post isn’t going to make up for it.

So, for now, I am pushing ahead without all my ducks in a row. The time I spent looking for an automation solution could have been used writing more content or building more links. And it should have. The results show in my recent affiliate sales which I have neglected too long.

I figured I would write this post for those of you who don’t subscribe to Digital Products Review. This type of stuff is now what I cover over there. While here, I rant, organize, prioritize, get ducks in a row and sometimes, yes, bitch like a bald cry baby, there I write about making money. Each has a part in making money online. I think most people are looking for that part of making money online. It is only after I hit the first plateau and it stuck around for a few years that I realized that there was more to making money online.

In some freakish accident about 48 hours ago, the Alexa ranks were shuffled. As a result, my other blog now has a higher ranking with Alexa than this one.

I wondered how this would effect the Top 100 Make Money Online Blogs which Ryan Shamus painstakingly went through one by one and described recently. It’s well worth a look. As far as the list goes, I see a lot of same names, just in different places. I dropped about four places.

Also today would have been the day that Marcus Hochstadt’s Blog broke the Alexa 50,000 barrier. He was going to hold a contest to celebrate the occasion. Well, the contest is still on.

My contribution is The Confessions Of A Lazy Super Affiliate which I will be buying for the contest. I already have my own copy. I will also be writing my take on the book. An addition, so to speak. I consider this ebook the 4 Hour Workweek for Affiliate Marketers. It’s a gradual process of building automation and outsourcing into an affiliate marketing business, so you can work less and less.

But this is not a beginner book. This a blueprint that you will have to fill the blanks in with experience or research at some of the links the book suggests. But the book is not geared toward blogging. I think it can be. That is what the report I am writing will cover.

Here’s the contest details, over $7000 worth of prizes and 66,666 Entrecard credits.

Consultations, Products & Services

Max from list of blogs using the CommentLuv plugin over at my site Digital Product Review. I am just getting the final tweaks on the theme done and am ready to start getting a little more traffic. I figured this list would bring some. It only has 100 blogs on it now, but I have about 250 more links to go through, so look for updates. A large percentage of these blogs have an Entrecard widget, a second reason to check this list out.

I put up another WordPress plugin project for bidding. It’s a simple one and I will be using it to check out developers. The plugin is a huge project, so I am getting it made piece by piece until it is finished, depending on my budget for hiring developers and my own time to add to it.

I purchased and read The Lazy Affiliate Marketer. This is an awesome book for intermediate affiliate marketers. I finished reading it in a day. The blueprint I have used to make money through affiliate marketing is about 20% of the book. The other 80% is where I want to go. Plus I have some ideas to add to the book. So I will be writing a report expanding the book, adding a few more techniques and giving it away with future purchases. Look for the annoucement when I am done with the report.

I did some work around the house.

I came up with an awesome idea for my domain Dir23.com which is just sitting around collecting dust, but that is going to require some Drupal knowledge. The idea. I’ll wait until the site’s done.

After my post about automatic related content, I have explored it more by playing around on my Squidoo account, just trying to find how many different feeds I could come up with to cluster around one concept. A laboratory of some sorts. The SimplePie plugin works great for WordPress, but it requires a little php knowledge. I have written some preprocessors for the plugin and noted all the code and will be writing a post about using it the day I make it live here, along with some ways to make money by using the plugin.

That made me want to build a list of Squidoo-like sites: dofollow, the ability to add multiple feed and content sources, and no marketing haters. On the to do list.

I have been questioning myself about post frequency for a while. The problem is that there is a lot of info on the subject and a lot of opinions. One thing I have noticed: work put in on posting and commenting on the weekends is usually less effective during the weekend. In other words, I get more mileage out of my weekday post. Another thing: I get a lot of comments on the post just before the last one I posted. I figured I will drop myself down to every other day posting for now, with a goal of 4 posts a week. I will have to discipline myself by timestamping post forward even when I can’t wait to publish. On the weekends, I will post a light post, most likely off topic. I write some long posts quite often. Those should be able to make it a couple of days and give me an off day for my other blog and projects. Plus, it’s close to the same amount of posts I have been getting in anyway. Might as well stop berating myself and make it the new rule. But I would like to hear opinions on the topic of post frequency because nothing has totally swayed me one way (daily posting or more) or the other (every other day or a few times a week).

And that’s about it.
<div

Affiliate marketing is recession proof. If Americans are broke, I can sell in Australia, England, Canada and other English speaking countries. But I really haven’t had to. By focusing my efforts with techniques I learned from Zen to Done and other books, I have steadily been increasing my online income. In fact, if I take one of the last few months and compare it to last year, I have replaced by day job’s income.

I don’t make much at the day job. Take what you would consider running an ecommerce site and the operations behind would pay and cut it at least in half. But it’s an easy job with the perks that I have always got any day off I wanted, I only work 4 days, and I am left to myself.

Plus I know what I want in life. I don’t want to retire with some else’s name on my company approved shirt. And it would be harder to walk away from a job that paid what I consider I am worth. I would have to replace twice as much income.

My wife doesn’t work because we believe it takes a family to raise a child and the village should keep it’s nose and it’s lowest common denominator values, dogmas and ideas out of it. We didn’t choose this village and according to the village, we have gone about everything the wrong way. But I am here writing this post. Once the average intelligence of the general population beats that of all the members of my family, then I might listen. Shouldn’t a value have value?

So I kept my day job and starting playing with stuff I had been researching for a few years, affiliate marketing. And I was lucky to start making some money a few months later and by a year, the money that someone would pay a guy will a G.E.D. couldn’t touch what I made online.

But affiliate marketing has it’s ups and downs. If you aren’t bipolar it can quickly make you so. Happy when the money’s good and panic when things aren’t so bright. And full-fledged dread when a $30,000 a year site gets banned by Google. I am half way through my third year and am finally adjusting to it. Of course, the cumulative effect of three years of work can stabilize the income a little.

"Make Money Online" ebooks and blogs for the most part leave you hanging after you have the money in your pocket. And to tell you the truth I have run into very few ebooks I would call a downright "scam". Most people are just lazy or jump in at the wrong point and then throw "scam" around to justify their failure.

My day job just about covers the mortgage payment and groceries each month. That’s it. All the insurance, hospital bills, the rest of the groceries, etc. come out of the checks that fluctuate. And they can fluctuate dramatically from $8000 profit one month to $2000 the next especially in the early stages.

It is hard to see a pattern like that into you are in it for a year. And it takes a while to adjust. The first year, we went through a few months of being poor and jumped a few brackets straight into middle class. It’s dramatic and can give you a false sense of security.

We had a great Christmas, got married, bought a car (the Ferrari’s a joke and a dig) and bought a house in that year. At first, there was excess money. When it started running out, I had to come up with something. As a single, I lived pretty Spartan. I couldn’t force that on my family.

Now I run a two week evolving budget based on the checks that come in. Savings comes out first. Then the advertising credit card. Then bills. Then groceries. Then we go to the list. The list of needs and wants that is waiting on money.

Some periods there is nothing left for the list. That is when we used to run for the credit cards. "I can make it up next month". Next month lasted for half a year at times. Half a year where I pushed myself hard. I hate debt. I ran up $30,000 in credit card debt in my early twenties (you can actually ignore these people indefinitely and use current credit to beat out old debt) and I don’t want to go there again.

For now, that’s what works for me. It will evolve of course. Any plan that doesn’t is doomed for failure because change is natural. But I wanted to point out that there are many facets to learning how to make money online, which is the whole point of this blog to begin with.
<div

The article says:

For instance, an online retailer could build a service in Facebook to let people recommend music or books to their friends, based on the relationships they’ve already established on the site.

I know so many people through social networks constantly struggling with how to make money online. Yet these same people are really a passionate about different and various websites and products. And this passion spread like a virus through the online community. Having companies approach users to make money by doing what they already do is a win, win situation.
Many new stories make it to the internet before the tv and these vigilant bloggers are starting to get their props. It’s time retail companies give props to what has too long been free advertising.

What this means to affiliate marketers remains to be seen. Competing with an evangelist of a product for sales may be a hard thing to do.

I think this may be the main reason why they didn’t sell out to Yahoo for One Billion Dollars. Yeah, that’s so many zeros, I’d buy myself an island and kiss the internet goodbye. Or something similiar. Then again maybe not kiss the internet goodbye. It’s good for other uses.

Imagine how this is spread. When I tell people I’m an affiliate marketer, I have to go through this long explanation of what I do. And if they finally get it and then ask how, I have to bill them. But if all you say was,”Dude, what you do is this: Go to Facebook. Sign up. Spread the word about things you like and the things you’ve bought and you’ll get a check.” , they would get it right away.

Nothing like, “Well, first you build a webpage.”. href="http://www.clickbankebook.com/download/projectx.html">Affiliate Project X

I basically stumbled into affiliate marketing through my interest in programming, software, and the internet. And because I never had the time or money to finish college. And in many people’s opinion, the only way to make a good living without a degree is to go into sales or somehow scrape enough money together to start your own business.

Number one, I am not good at face to face sales. I used to work in retail but that basically meant helping someone make a choice. They came to the store to buy something. I just had to fit customers needs to product features. But the real money in sales comes in something like real estate or car sales. I am just not outgoing enough to survive in these fields.

And that’s how affiliate marketing works for me. This is sales, but online. This is do or die sales. You make a sale and you get paid. Or you don’t and you’ve just wasted your time.

But it seems that there are levels of affiliate marketers. And as next new information product rehashes the same old info. The mid-rank affiliate marketers, those that actually put a lot of time in and have goals, never seem to hit the same income level as the six-figure affiliates.

Affiliate Project X claims the reason why is that six figure affiliates do things a little differently. I purchased the book and decided to give it a try. Why? Because I am one of those mid-rank affiliates that does put in a lot of time, but with a wife and family, can’t seem to break out of the day job.

I have made it to method # 1 in the book which basically outlines a better way to run an adwords campaign. And it definitely has merit. It’s a virtual guarantee that customers will buy through you instead of another affiliate. It is called the art of pre-sell.

This is a different kind of landing page, but it also is a different way of choosing keywords.

To Be Continued…
<div
