Luving the Comments
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
This blog didn’t used to get very many comments. I have been using dofollow for a while but never got around to putting a banner up that stating that fact. This puts me in good company. Why not give back to people who comment on your blog by giving them a good link back to their site instead of basically slapping them in their face for their comment. "Thanks for the comment, but I am going to treat you like a spammer and link back to your site with a nofollow tag." The point of nofollow was to prevent spammers from gaining links from blogs.
Even worse, there are bloggers out there who fly the dofollow flag and are on the dofollow lists, but if you look at their source code, they are using nofollow. They are dofollow liars.
I go back to Andy Beard for a list of do-follow plugins for Wordpress.
This next one is relatively new and adds a new twist. Not only does the commenter get a link back to their site but also to their last post. Talk about link love. It’s link love with anchor text. I am all for ranking #1 in Google for my name. But ranking for other terms help also.
A few dofollow lists that you can submit your blog to once you install the plugin.
This first one is highly recommended. Nickoo also has a variety of badges to choose from so you can tell your readers you appreciate their comments.

I have built a river of Dofollow blog posts and the ultimate list of dofollow blogs.

Hi Stephan,
I’ve read many posts of late discussing the pro’s and con’s of using dofollow vs. nofollow. Some of the so-called A-list bloggers such as Darren Rowse have gone back to using nofollow due to the large numbers of spammers just leaving comments for the sake of link juice.
I think that’s appalling to say the least, so I completely understand why some people had to go that route. Personally, I think it’s very good Karma to give people who comment regularly a bit of linky love in return for taking the time to read the post and comment. I use the plugin that allows for linky love after three comments, and even though I’ve had some people try to get around it by leaving spam like comments on three different posts, I moderate my comments and delete them without hesitation.
You might be interested in checking out a post on this very topic on “Random Jabber” that got a lot of attention and comments, even from Darren giving his opinions on the matter of Dofollow vs. Nofollow.

I guess I don’t get that much traffic yet, but askimet does a good job of handling my spam. But who knows what they get with their traffic.
I have received a lot of hits just from the nofollow comments on John Chow and Problogger.
And I do watch people try to just into my top commenters with short quick comments.
And to conserve link juice when using dofollow, just add more links to pages on your own site on every page: top post, categories, tags, featured posts, etc. That way more juice is going back into your site.
CommentLuv is by far the best plugin around. I’ve used it for a while and have gained several regular commentors based solely on this plugin. It rocks.

Nice post, I am intrigued by the CommentLuv Plugin but have not started using it yet.

Funny…I just wrote an article tonight about this…..I didn’t realize how common this was.
It irks me that some claim they are following when they are bold faced lying about it.
I just happened to blog about this last night. It is a great revolution and should be embraced by all bloggers.

Well, thanks for the campaign. I see there are plenty of bloggers who have no-follow links policy. I think it’s a bit harsh. I mean, you can just moderate all the posts in your blog so all the spammers’ links will be erased easily.
Think this is something I’m going to try out in the next few days - thanks for the links to the do-follow resources - think I’ll be sharing the luv soon

I thought knowledge of this was pretty wide spread, which is why I thought I was rehashing information that already had been written before, but I guess we still need to get the word out on dofollow.
Great to see you supporting the dofollow movement! Here is a comprehensive list of dofollow plugins — complete with reviews and screenshots — that may help your readers get involved. Thanks for the post!

Hi Stephan,
“Even worse, there are bloggers out there who fly the dofollow flag and are on the dofollow lists, but if you look at their source code, they are using nofollow. They are dofollow liars.”
It’s look funny when somebody using that script. They think they do the right way but not. They have been cheated. So terrible. We should be careful about this thing.

Hey, a stupid question: I have installed the commentlove plugin and activated it.When I look at my blogs source code I see the following code
Does this mean that I have disabled the “no follow”? If not, what do I have to do to disable it?

The CommetnLuv plugin doesn’t remove the no follow tags. You have to install another plugin to do that. I linked to a list of them on Andy Beard’s site.
Have you had any problems with Comment Luv? I noticed a few comments here didn’t get any. I had it on my blog and it worked okay for a day or two but since then the only one who get’s any Luv is me when I’m not signed in as Admin… So I’ve turned it off for now until I can have a look at it.

It seems to miss a post every now and then on my blog and on blogs that I have commented on. But there is a newer version than mine. I just haven’t gotten around to installing it yet. Might fix it. Who knows.
hey, do they have the comment luv plugin on blogger? I have a blogger and i cant seem to find this comment luv plugin. *sigh*

I am not sure about Blogger. You are really limited with free blogging platforms.

Thanks for sharing that links. Some I know and some I don’t. I had a great website that had much more dofollow blog lists with PR and niche, I bookmarked it but an automatic update of my browser got all my bookmarked site deleted.
Anyways thanks for the links and the lists.
I HATE that. It has happened to me twice. And I always mean to do backups of my bookmarks and feeds regularly, but whenever I go to re-import them, the file is about three months old.
thanks for the resource list..in fact..Barry Welford posted a reference link to Andy Beards Dofollow plugin list and I took his advice and installed the Wordpress version..(just a couple of days ago!)
Im going to check out the other stuff you have listed (directories) thanks.

Hi Stephan,
If someone takes the time to visit your site, read an article and leave a comment, what reason is there not to give a back link to the reader/commenter? This is a useful article and I am going to try the plugin myself.

What you gain from it is more than the links you are giving away. At least on some blogs. With certain niches, I would think you would have to install something like Lucia’s Link Love plugin where you have to leave a specific amount of comments before you get dofollow.
You make a very good point. I just now got into blogging but I’m already being faced with this dilemma. Do I go with nofollow or dofollow links?! I’m still trying to decide but I’m starting to lean more towards the dofollow side. My site is not that popular yet so I can manage reading through all the comments. Either way, thanks for sharing the links. I’m bookmarking the site until I figure out what I’m going to do for sure.

Comment Luv plugin is great. Even I love to read and comment on those blogs that have this plugin. And its definitely a good way to get some extra traffic since it shows your latest posts on other blogs.

I would also love to make my blog dofollow but have no clue how since my platform is thumblogger.com
Do you have any idea how to change that on the html code of any other platform than blogger or wordpress?
I checked out the site. It seems proprietary. I would ask in their support forums.
I’ve started using Comment Luv and noticed that it is adding the nofollow attribute to commentors links.
This doesn’t seem right.
Anybody else see this?
Yes, it doesn’t remove dofollow. You still have to use a dofollow plugin for that. I have run into issues with plugins lately. I had commentluv here and it does not seem to ply well with this theme. Wordpress and all of my plugins are up to date, but when I activate CommentLuv it doesn’t show.
As far as dofollow goes, I have also found a few problems with the standard dofollow plugin. It will sometimes cause invisible comments, where you can see the comment in admin, but the body of the comment is invisible here.
I recommend Lucia’s Linky Love for dofollow. It doesn’t seem to have that issue. The only thing about that plugin is that it has a threshold for making comments dofollow and the minimum is after three comments.
Thank you really. This is the information that I’ve been looking for.
I’d only come across 2 on your list before - so many thanks, as that’s taken a little weight off of today’s research.
great article. thanks also check out my new free submit do follow social bookmarking
