Google Plus vs. Facebook: Who Will Win In the Battle of Social Networking Sites?

Surely Facebook felt very little guilt when all of Myspace’s fans began ignoring their accounts and started networking by the thousands through Facebook instead, but I wonder how they will feel now that the tides have turned.  Pretty soon Google may know exactly what it feels like when Google + takes the world by storm in the very near future.  It should not come by surprise that Google is trying to hop on the social networking bandwagon again as they have tried in the past with platforms like Google Buzz and Google Friend Connect.  But the new Google attempt at social networking has got a lot of features that it didn’t have before, and a lot of features that Facebook only wishes it could have.

Chatting On Facebook vs. Hanging Out On Google Plus

Why chat with your friends when you can hang out with them right?  Well, we never had the option otherwise before Google + but now we have no excuses.  Facebook’s cheesy chat area will likely be getting little attention when users discover that Google Plus allows users to video chat with multiple friends at once.  What makes the feature super cool though is that you never know who might stop by to “hang out” with you and your friends, so its like being out while having the luxury of staying in.  Staying home on a Friday night may just get a little less boring thanks to Google Plus.  Sorry Facebook but I think Google won this round…

Facebook Status Updates vs. Google Plus Circle Updates

It’s great being able to update everyone on what is going on in your life but somethings are meant for some to hear and not others.  Facebook’s status update section is better than Myspace’s was but the Google Plus Circles updates are going to be a major Facebook update competitor.  With Google’s new feature you can update different circles of friends and family with different information.  So your friends don’t have to know that your mom made you lunch on any given day and your mom doesn’t have to know that your going to a strip joint that night.  Facebook will be hard pressed to compete with a feature like that, and probably wouldn’t even try since “privacy” is an ambigous word to them to begin with.

Facebook Photo Sharing vs. Google Plus Instant Upload

Sharing photos through Facebook is a great way to share your experiences with friends and family but you could send them pictures in the mail by the time you get them uploaded to FB.  Google Plus is making it easier by doing all the work for you.  With Google + pictures are uploaded instantly so you can post them instantly.  Seems like Google + is winning this round too but I guess we will really just have to wait and see.

The preliminary evaluation puts Google + in the lead but until more people are”invited” to try it out we won’t know who the winner is going to be.  One thing we can be sure of though is that Google + has already got features that we have been waiting to see.

I noticed that Facebook lost no time in introducing dual-level “friendship.” My guess is that they will be frantically scrambling to match G+ feature-for-feature over the next few months, while they still have the advantage of a vast userbase.

Personally, I don’t care. I never used Facebook, and I will probably never use G+. Actually, I’m not even using Google anymore – I switched to DuckDuckGo.

This time Google has managed to bring out a successful product, which has become popular not because it’s a Google product, but because it offers really cool features. FB has become from a social tool, more like and advertising tool, and it feels really crowded with ads, on the other hand Google + is new in the business so it’s more lightweight in this area – and this is definitely a big plus.

  3. Ana @ Como Hacer Ensayos

The only downside of Google+ in my case is that I already have Facebook. I feel a bit reluctant to shift to one more social network. I’ll do it only if I have to, although I see that the features are much better thought through.

  4. Dan

This article was definitively +1 worthy:)! I think Facebook needs to be careful, the are always sneaky.

  5. Usman

I agree with Leonard that Google Plus has introduced advanced and innovative features that rank ahead of those offered by Facebook. Although Facebook is trying to respond by imitating the features offered by Google + but I think the lifecycle of social media websites has deceased like we saw Myspace and Orkut gradually fading out in front of facebook and now one could easily speculate Google Plus to take over Facebook in the years to come. I personally liked the Google Circles that enable us to maintain a single account for family and friends. Indeed Google + wins the race against Facebook in major aspects.

Google+open links from your service. A large number of site owners now enjoy Google+. The seizure should occur.

  7. Alan

Very interesting. I have been dodging Google+ because I figured it would just be a clone of everything else we have seen. Might be time to give it a shot. The hanging out option sounds pretty cool.

Facebook has friend “Circles” now too. Google basically paid millions of dollars to give Facebook a great idea.

They need to provide a service that is different or better. Google + is neither…

  9. Buchete

Google+ is trying so hard to beat Facebook in the Social Media field. Both have pros and cons but i find Google+ simpler to use and navigate. After Google Circles, Facebook’s response was those friend lists, where you can add family, close friends, coworkers, colleagues and so on.

I think G+ will run over Facebook sooner that we think.

  10. Claus

In view of all the recent changes FB has made…in the beginning FB was simple and this was the draw bringing users from myspace. With the lack of privacy and the lack of choice over complicated streams, lists, top stories, and having to subscribe to friends pages to view their streams. There is alot of confusion and difficulty using facebook now. I think users will look and move to another social networking site like what happened in myspace a few years back. Users want something easy to utilize. Google plus provides both the simplicity and privacy that users desire.

  11. Francis

I agree with Usman, Google plus introduced a lot of new and cool features, but at this time it can’t beat facebook’s established number. Google plus will probably take off when it will be formally introduced in asia.

  12. african safari victoria falls

One things always come in mind whenever or whoever calls the name of Google that is innovative acitivites by the Google so it is staying ahead. So as you mentioned that Google circle and photo sharing updates are better than Facebook although i did not use much Google Plus but i think that Google Plus has much better loading speed than the Facebook. Google has used the Jquery for it.

  13. Monica

I have read several articles on Google+, but none that went as in depth as you about the features it offers. In fact, most of them were quite dismissive of it and I didn’t realize you could do so many things with it that Facebook can’t. I love the fact that you can update the circles with different info, because who wants their parents knowing what they are doing? The video chat is an awesome feature, but I haven’t learned enough about Google+ to even begin to attempt it. I wouldn’t be surprised if Facebook has some people out there writing negative articles about Google+, because they want to maintain their top place. Really enjoyed your article!

  14. employee time tracking

Although Google Plus is providing many new features but beating Facebook something like impossible. Facebook has become a brand as social bookmarking website and Google Plus would have to work months and months to beat. Now users has been used to with Facebook.

  15. Sasha Fellows

I know myself and 90% of my connections have made the transition to Google+. In my opinion Facebook has become too ‘spammy’..

  16. The Money Ways

It’s not that I’m a fan of facebook (no pun intended), but if Google owns the majority of search traffic, monetization (adsense), advertising (adwords) and then gets the majority of social networking traffic, anyone in the SEO or blogging industry could be in trouble.

  17. abir

Well come Google Plus vs. Facebook competition.A competition always create good thing for all.

  18. Mateo

Great article and thank you for posting;-)

just a quick question. what do you think of google + for business marketing as opposed to facebook’s fanpage system?

  19. Tom's EA

I’ve been a long time Facebook user before I finally switch to Google+ and I could really see the big differences between the two of them. When it comes to innovation Google+ comes ahead compare to Facebook and I think the former has still lots of new features to introduce later on. Thanks for sharing this post. Keep it up!

  20. Noob

hmmm I dont think so that facebook goes down in front of Google+….Main reason is many people use facebook for Marketing…

  21. Mike

I think that Facebook will win the battle of social networking sites. Google has won the battle of search engines already.

  22. James Macquarie

Facebook has the edge as it is where people are at the moment> People need a reason to move and they won’t move to another service if the majority of their friends are still on facebook. So i think it will take a make issue (ouage, virus, privacy etc )to hit facebook inorder to get people to migrate to google +

  23. Sarah Scott

Internet users may get interested in using Google+ but Google need to do hard work to win more users from Facebook, from the previous updates that Facebook have done with their new interface there are tons of users who hated it but as time goes by, they already have used to it. My point is Google need to provide something that is worth migrating. With the features that it has might be a great start in winning users around the globe.

  24. Rob Benwell

Many People think that Google+ has better features, so only time will tell if Facebook will have a serious Competitor.Personally, I think Google Plus is much better. But it seems that most People prefer to stay on Facebook, because their Friends are still there.

  25. letting agents hull

No doubt Facebook is the most popular now in terms of social media but Google+ has a lot to offer to its user. In terms of application and features Facebook has yet more to offer later on.

  26. Julie

I believe that it is not possible to defeat Facebook so easily. I saw all features of google plus. It is lovable but no one can go on it until his/her all friends gather on google plus.

  27. Jake

If you think Facebook is going to fade you are dearly wrong.. Facebook and Google in my mind are not even really competing one another. They are really just filling 2 different voids. Thats all.

  28. web agency

Yes, use of circle is so intuitive and friendly! Also google+ was a way for google to improove graphic layout of all theyr services i think :) google+ rules ;)

  29. Fred

I won’t comment whether Google’s new Google Plus is a better social network than Facebook but I just really don’t see the Google winning this one. If there’s anyone that could uproot Facebook nowadays it is Google, sure, but I think they waited too long to ‘attack’. The world sticks with FB – my bet.

  30. Acupuncture NYC

As of the moment, people still prefer to use Facebook over Google+ either on personal or business use since Facebook features are a lot way better compare to Google +.

  31. Zoltan

“It’s great being able to update everyone on what is going on in your life but somethings are meant for some to hear and not others. ” These lines tell my tale.In the past i couldn’t prevent friends reading information which was intended for co-workers or spouse but now Google Plus has solved that problem. You can easily divide your contacts into circles and decide which information must be supplied to whom. And recently Google announced that google plus has crossed 40 million users mark.I think google has learned a lot from their past adventures in social media such as google buzz and orkut and this time they have really created a wonderful product.

  32. Kudos

Hmm, an interesting analysis, but I think the biggest barrier is that most people are generally happy with facebook and Google doesn’t give the average person a good enough reason to switch.

Still, it’s going to be interesting to see what pans out – G+ is having their 3rd biggest month ever from the sounds of it.

  33. fantastic sams

Google + has many unique features that facebook does not posses. In facebook every one can tag your pic but in Google + security factor is maintained. You can manage your family circle separate than friends circle.Today Google + plus has also introduced online gaming service.

  34. Nicholas

I think that Google Plus has introduced a lot of things that may differ itself from facebook, and in a way might be appealing, but facebook has embedded itself not only as the major social media site, but as well as connecting with other sites/companies. You can visit other social media, or bookmarking sites and not have an account at all, link using your facebook id, and boom they have your information. I think if google+ is going to out do facebook they really need to step it up.

  35. santie

Great post and blog! I don’t have time to read every post at the moment but I have book-marked it and also added your RSS feeds, so when I have time I will be back to read more. Please do keep up the great work. thanks

  36. Miami Orlando bus

Leonard made pretty good points here. Although, I would love to see which one is better in regards to business marketing.

Leonard, if you happen to know this, it will be a great article.

    Thanks.

  37. livescore

I believe the life cycle of communal newspapers websites has deceased like we glimpsed Myspace and Orkut step-by-step fading out in front of facebook and now one could effortlessly speculate Google Plus to conquer Facebook in the years to come

  38. frictionhinge

In The Shorter Term, i think the google plus could not surpass the facebook social networking, but the google full of excellent potential.

  39. Students At Risk

I think that Google Plus is the answer many people have been looking for with social networking. It’s a step up from Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Its all rolled into one.

  40. Oliver@cyclone fencing

The answers are so obvious. In the early days when face book was not introduced, Google was the only one surviving in the market with lots and lots of traffic. But after the introduction of face book, more number of users is attracted to face book and soon face book is going to break the record of Google once it has more users than Google.
