style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: small;">Google Plus vs. Facebook: Who Will Win In the Battle of Social Networking Sites?

Surely Facebook felt very little guilt when all of Myspace’s fans began ignoring their accounts and started networking by the thousands through Facebook instead, but I wonder how they will feel now that the tides have turned. Pretty soon Google may know exactly what it feels like when Google + takes the world by storm in the very near future. It should not come by surprise that Google is trying to hop on the social networking bandwagon again as they have tried in the past with platforms like Google Buzz and Google Friend Connect. But the new Google attempt at social networking has got a lot of features that it didn’t have before, and a lot of features that Facebook only wishes it could have.

Chatting On Facebook vs. Hanging Out On Google Plus

Why chat with your friends when you can hang out with them right? Well, we never had the option otherwise before Google + but now we have no excuses. Facebook’s cheesy chat area will likely be getting little attention when users discover that Google Plus allows users to video chat with multiple friends at once. What makes the feature super cool though is that you never know who might stop by to “hang out” with you and your friends, so its like being out while having the luxury of staying in. Staying home on a Friday night may just get a little less boring thanks to Google Plus. Sorry Facebook but I think Google won this round…

Facebook Status Updates vs. Google Plus Circle Updates

It’s great being able to update everyone on what is going on in your life but somethings are meant for some to hear and not others. Facebook’s status update section is better than Myspace’s was but the Google Plus Circles updates are going to be a major Facebook update competitor. With Google’s new feature you can update different circles of friends and family with different information. So your friends don’t have to know that your mom made you lunch on any given day and your mom doesn’t have to know that your going to a strip joint that night. Facebook will be hard pressed to compete with a feature like that, and probably wouldn’t even try since “privacy” is an ambigous word to them to begin with.

Facebook Photo Sharing vs. Google Plus Instant Upload

Sharing photos through Facebook is a great way to share your experiences with friends and family but you could send them pictures in the mail by the time you get them uploaded to FB. Google Plus is making it easier by doing all the work for you. With Google + pictures are uploaded instantly so you can post them instantly. Seems like Google + is winning this round too but I guess we will really just have to wait and see.

The preliminary evaluation puts Google + in the lead but until more people are”invited” to try it out we won’t know who the winner is going to be. One thing we can be sure of though is that Google + has already got features that we have been waiting to see.

<span

After you are done there, you are taken to a page to connect your Digg account with Your Twitter, Facebook and Google Accounts.I simultaneously clicked the three buttons to connect to Twitter, Facebook and Google just see if all three would run at once and yes, yes they did. href="http://www.stephanmiller.com/a-twitter-machine/" target="_blank">my last post a cliff hanger. To tell you the truth, I was running out of time and decided to just cut the post in two parts. The machine is rather simple and mine is geared to affiliate marketing, but I will explain it so that you can create one for just about any topic or industry.

Now I now there will be questions about spam whenever any sort of automation enters the conversation. Spam is how you cook it. This Twitter account I actually use. The automation is there because I don’t use it as often as I would want to. It picks up the slack when I am away.

Here are the concepts I started with:

Not everyone can start with celebrity and gain 1,000,000 Twitter followers by osmosis.

People like to follow others that tweet about content they are interested in.

You want the amount of people you follow to not be too much higher than those that you are following.

The most active Twitter users are either new or addicted.

Tweeting links related to your topic that aren’t your own is altruistic…on the surface and spreads new knowledge to the people following you.

The Machine

My focus on this account is affiliate marketing, like I said. So first I found a lot of blogs that I trusted to have great posts on the topic. I actually already had all of these in my feed reader. So I took these feeds, created a category in Feedhub and added them to a hub.

Once I had these feeds waiting and ready, I created a twitterfeed account attached to my digireviews Twitter account. Twitterfeed uses OpenID for logins, so I also created a Google account first. It is a good thing to have a Gmail account attached to each various blog and "persona" you may have. I may be Stephan Miller on this other blog also and cover similar topics but I do so from another angle. There are many reasons for this, but the reason I will use now is that I can only used one Twitter account with one twitterfeed login.

So after creating the account, step 2 is now adding the feed I created in Feedhub to twitterfeed. I also added the feeds from two of my blogs to the same twitterfeed account. I guess I could have added all the feeds I added to Feedhub one by one at this point rather than adding the extra, but Feedhub has a filtering processes that picks the top posts from the feeds rather than every single post. It also tracks clicks on the feed links to improve these choices. I figured it would cut down on noise and improve the tweets over time.

Now is this all I did. Of course not. This was to make my Twitter account active when I was not and I found myself actually checking the account to see what I tweeted and reading the posts that were.

Next I created an account with Tweetlater. This allowed me automate specific tweets like affiliate products I was promoting and send automated DM’s to people. Now some people hate automated DM’s but it all depends on the industry. My automated DM sent new followers to my blog to subscribe and hopefully while subscribing they noticed I was giving a free WordPress plugin that ads Clickbank hopads to each post. And in order for them to get it, they had to subscribe to my list. You see there is more too this machine than Twitter and I always like killing as many birds with one stone as I can, pun intended.

Building a Following

This part was easy but it involves a lot of grunt work. First you must imagine who your perfect followers would be following now. In affiliate marketing, I went for affiliate marketers that had a lot of followers and also for the Twitter accounts of affiliate programs like Clickbank. And I went through and followed about 200 a day, give or take and some days I just did not have the time.

But you never really want the count of people you follow to get much higher than the count of those following you. So every two to three days, I went in and unfollowed people who didn’t follow me back. There are some tools to help you do this out there, of course like Friend or Follow, Twitterless and Less Friends.

There is a another process you can use for this that takes a bit longer but you will have much more targeted and receptive group of followers. Search twitter for "first tweet" and then check each person’s bio and website. Then just follow those people who seem to fit the demographic for your niche. Of course, you can also just use Twitter search to find the people who might be interested in what your account has to offer just by searching for specific terms related to your topic or niche.

And these tools may help: WeFollow, Just Tweet It, Twitterator (when you happen to find a list of good people to follow), Twubble, Who Should I Follow? and Mr.Tweet.

Keep It Real

This is not meant to be a set it and forget it account. I am active on it almost every day. Finding new things, making observations and retweeting other’s tweets. But after having my first account, I realized that to build a targeted one and to build it faster, you have to be proactive. My personal account here will remain what it is, but I needed something more for my affiliate marketing Twitter account.

And for the ultimate tool, download Seesmic Desktop. It allows you to moniter and tweet from multiple accounts with one click. It allow you to search and save searches. I will let the picture below explain this:

In a Nutshell

Everyone with a blog makes lists and unfortunately this leaves you with a lot of tools that you have no idea how to use efficiently until you have time to investigate them all. What I do with these lists is find out how to make these tools work together for a purpose. It’s the difference between features and benefits. People are out looking for the benefits. And everyone is writing about features.

This process is relatively simple and my listing of useful tools may have made it more confusing than it needs to be, so here are the basics.

Find people who you think would want to follow you and follow them.

Find some useful feeds you trust to have good material and tweet them automatically.

Set up your own automated tweets for specific marketing reasons.

Use the time you saved to be real as you would with any Twitter account.

UpDate – HootSuite

I was going to add this as a comment, but I thought this would be better. I have had a HootSuite account for a while and just had a chance to try it right after publishing this post. This tool is awesome. You can schedule tweets with it, control multiple Twitter accounts and post to multiple Twitter accounts.

Twitter account for over a year now and just topped 1600 subscribers. With that account, I tweet things and go through new followers and follow anyone that interests me, manually. I rarely go looking for people for follow. My second Twitter account is a few months old and had less than 200 subscribers, so I tried an experiment. But let me show you the results first.

CrunchBase

Twitter has changed search and has also changed the meaning of the term “up-to-date”. This is no longer waiting until the next scheduled news cast. And forget the newspaper. Even Google is not that fast. And who needs to read a whole page when you can get the gist of what’s going on in 140 characters. Alright, I went to far with the last one. Reading is good and something I wish I had more time for, but my mission to carry a library around in my head is doomed to failure.

With search engines, results are ranked by various algorithms. With Twitter search, results are ranked by now. This is a very notable difference and a reason why Twitter is the best choice for some search queries.

To Look for a Job

In today’s economy, it’s probably best to get the freshest job listings. That way you can be there first to put in your application. And Twitter helps.

To Track Pandemics

People tweet about everything, including sicknesses but not everyone goes to the doctor right away. There has to be a way to use this data and yes, there is.

To Beat the Paparazzi

I had to throw this one in there, because so many people are interested in celebrities. Tweets are faster that blog posts or TV shows and you can get the information right from the horse’s mouth. And as I was searching for a list, I found a site dedicated to celebrities on Twitter. Obviously, not one of my uses.

To Satisfy Curiousity

If you aren’t sure what to track, throw a random word out like “library” and see what people are saying about it.

And, as I was writing this article, looking for other articles, I ended up at Digg and ran into the Diggbar, which I never saw before. Since it’s new, I wanted to find out what people thought of it as well as what it was. I went to Twitter. Using Google, I would have ended up most likely at blog. And because of Digg’s popularity, a highly ranked blog (see algorithms above) and being a highly ranked blog, I would probably read a spiced up press release. With Twitter, I got real, I got now and I got more than one opinion.

To Find Potential Customers

Google Adwords works with Google search. Someone looking for something enters terms in the search box and hopefully, if you chose your keywords correctly, you will gain new customers by placing ads with Google.

With Twitter, you may be able to reach people before they search, when they are just venting, when they are throwing their issue out into the Twittersphere hoping for help. You can be that help. Ads aren’t a conversation. Twitter is.

Examples:

How to Listen for Opportunities on Twitter

Using Twitter Search to Find Buyers in the Act

To Help Existing Customers

I bitch about things on Twitter just to test the waters and see who is out there. I am amazed at which companies don’t care or don’t know what people are saying about them via Twitter. But other companies, like Comcast, which I bitched about once, do, despite the fact I did end up switching from Comcast.

To Find Customer Feedback and Use It

Sometimes, what your customer’s can say about your company and it’s products on Twitter is better than what you can say yourself. In fact, you better hope this is true, because people will talk about your products anyway. But if the word is good, you might as well use it to your benefit. Example: Skittles

To Find Competitor’s Feedback and Use It

If a lot of people really hate a competitor’s product, you can use Twitter searches to your benefit and gain more customers. Example: We All Hate Quickbooks

Some Ways to Use It More Effectively

If your goal is to listen, then you need some tools. You could open a whole bunch of tabs on your browser, but there are more effective ways.

Finding Trends

<a

Some are for bookmarks, some for articles and some for liking and commenting. My definition now is a site that I don’t own and I can put stuff on. What makes it social is that other people can see it. I was going to add “and interact”, but I don’t think that is necessarily a common denominator.

With 5,300,001 social networks out there, how do you choose? As an online marketer and/or blogger, you have ulterior motives. You want to build a network, get more subscribers and get more traffic to your blog. This is something you have to admit to yourself first. Once you join, you can drop your motives and be yourself. But initially you want to make sure that your time spent at the new network is time well spent. And one way to do this is to find people with like minds and like interests.

And if you are a blogger, the Bloghology Social Network may be for you. Bloghology has had a few setbacks. Starting as an online magazine with blogger interviews, we tried to make the jump to print and didn’t quite make it. But behind the scenes, the site where Bloghology is hosted has morphed into a social network for bloggers with new features being added almost weekly.

And here are some of those features:

A Blog – Social networks are the new mini-sites. It is good to spread your content around. Hording all of it on your blog is not a good move. Readers have to find your blog first and one way they do is by reading what you have written on a social network that already has traffic. Now if only I could practice more what I preach.

Groups – You can create groups and interact with other people on the network.

Social Network Integration – A must if you belong to more than one. And I belong to a few.

Events – You can post events and invite your friends from your network.

Dashboard – You can change the look and layout of your profile. Plus, add widgets.

So if you are a blogger that wants to learn more about blogging or a blogger who wants to build your network and traffic to your site. Advertiser or marketer? You can continue to reach bloggers one at a time through contact forms or you can reach thousands at Bloghology. In these economic times, the two things corporations increased their budget on is creating content and social media marketing. A membership at Bloghology is free and is at the intersection of both.

Related articles by Zemanta
<ul

I have built a lot of different sites for a lot of different people and this question always comes up. I’m not quite sure why. Some of these people had had brick and mortar stores for years But somehow when it comes to writing about their products, they draw a blank.

And I can understand that. Most people don’t like to write. And if that’s the issue, I can understand that. But don’t tell me you don’t have anything to say about your product.

The best salesman know everything there is to know about the product they are selling. It is no different on the Internet. In fact, maybe even a bit easier to show all the knowledge you have of your products on the Internet. Most hosting providers will give you a virtually unlimited amount of storage. Use it. Use it to build content around your products.

And it doesn’t matter if it’s a product you manufacture, sell retail or sell as an affiliate. Those with the most information (backed with the right promotions) will win the prize. And yes, I did list affiliates, because there are a lot of companies out there that will create a product and just forget about it because they know there is an army of affiliates waiting to promote that product. Be an army of one. by not stopping with the information your vendor gives you.

And before you start writing content, remember this: you know a lot more than who you are writing for. That seems like a simple statement, but you have to consistently remind yourself this. I did not know how new newbies could be until I helped someone with their first WordPress installation. A sentence for an intermediate WordPress user can translate into a thesis for a newbie.

What Type of Content?

First there is the product itself. What can you say about it? What color is the? What sizes it? Does it have any distinctive markings on it? What does it look like? If you had to identify it with the police sketch artist could you? I’m not asking these questions to be silly. I am asking them from experience. You’d be amazed at what people type into the search box. If you can answer that question, then your report is traffic.

What are the features of the product? We’ve all heard about features and benefits. The features are basically what a product does. And the benefits list how you benefit from the product. You’ve probably heard that you should focus on the benefits, but we are not just in the advertising field, we are also in the search engine field. A benefit may get someone to buy, but people search for features. When I want to make sure the gaps under my doors aren’t letting in cold air, I don’t search for “lower heating bills”. I search for “seal gap under door”.

But keep benefits in mind also. Benefits are for selling to people that aren’t in the market or at least, don’t think they are. The person on a mission will search for “seal gap under door”, but the person just browsing will need to be thrown the hint “lowers heating bills” which will jog his memory about last month’s bill. And if you have a lot of products that fulfill that benefit, you’re in luck. Benefits are more general and content is easier to find and create.

Tutorials are another way to expand the content you have available with a product. Again, it doesn’t matter if the product is your own or you are just an affiliate. A lot of affiliates have cleaned up by creating a bigger resource for the product they are selling than the vendor themselves. How do you use the product normally? What are some unconventional uses? What are some really unconventional uses? How do you do one very specific thing with the software? How do you do another? And another? Be clear and write good step by step instructions.

Written text is one form of content. We also have pictures, pictures you may need for the tutorials above. It is best to give these files a keyword based file name to help with your ranking. It may also help to host your images on a social image site like Flickr to get a bit more extra traffic. Then just add the flickr code to your posts or your pages.

Videos are another form of content that can help. Creating videos of you using or installing the product you sell. And make sure that you don’t just host the video on your site. Spread it as far you can by uploading it to every video site you can find.

Put a contact form on your site and beg for questions. Then answer them with posts when it makes sense to do so. If no one is asking questions, go to forums and answer sites and answer them there. Then go back to your site and write a more detailed answer.

Where to Put Your Content

Your site is a good start. But it is not the end.

You noticed that I said to host your pictures and videos on a social site if you can. This was not just to save you storage space. These sites have communities, huge communities.

There are also social networks, article directories and forums out there. On the internet, you have to think about potential. There are potential customers on these sites who will never find your site unless you make it visible to them. But here is not the place to sell. Here is the place to write anything related to your products that will set you up as an expert in your field or niche.

No product descriptions. No sales pages. No features. Show your knowledge of a product by covering it’s niche. If you sell computers, write about how to install a video card. If you sell blog themes, write about css

Content ideas are everywhere, you just have to look. And if you listen, potential customers will give you the best content ideas. But don’t be greedy and keep all of your content on site. The benefits of spreading your content around to various social sites and networks are massive. Now get to work. You have a lot of content to create.

Related articles by Zemanta

“Shoot! That software looks a lot better than the program I am currently using. Time to try it even though I have only used the other program for a week.”

Over the last weekend I downloaded some desktop meta-search software. I haven’t used software like this in a few years, ever since Google got a bit better at finding the sites I needed. What it does is grab the search results from multiple search engines at the same time and present them to you.

And what did I find using it? Hidden sites. Sites that Google never finds. Sites that still had value.

But guess what? I could do nothing with it other than read. And this made me think.

Did you ever use a blog search engine and try to find information? Did you find it?

Most blog search engines sort entries by date. Obviously because new is more valuable information for some reason. And I have noticed that more and more, standard search results seem to be following the same trend.

And if you really want to lose any sense of the past or history, follow a few people at Friendfeed. There is nothing old there.

Keeping up is a blur that in my head has a tendency to block the past. Initially, you may have started with a simple plan of posting every day and leaving 10 comments on other blogs each day. My little trip into blogging started that easily.

Eventually you will run into a lot of things that may help your blog and you will try them out. I did that also. Wow, a little bit of extra work can go a long way.

Then you get to the point that you can no longer categorize any of the activities you are involved in. But you know you can’t finish them in the day and you constantly feel behind. And I don’t think this is one point in your blogging. It is not a bridge you will pass and never come back to. It may show it’s head a few times. It has for me.

So let’s say that you have picked a niche. And that’s a good thing also. Wish I had done that here. But I have at other blogs.

And let’s say you know your subject matter. And you should. You picked it.

All that being said, there are really only a few duties:

Create It

Write a post on your blog.

Write an article to submit to article sites.

Write a report you can give away free.

Promote It

A lot of this comes natural via the next two duties and they may be all you need.

Submit your blog to feed directories.

Make sure you ping after every post.

Use SEO

Find It

Build profiles on social networks, forums, etc.

Find stories and information related to your niche.

Promote the stories like they were you’re own on social networks, bookmarking sites and social news sites.

Make yourself known for finding good information (and writing it).

Respond To It

You can’t always be the one to find the hot story, but you can get your name in there.

Comment on other blogs.

Comment and join the conversation at social sites.

Link to stories from your own blog posts.

And during all of this, don’t lose site of your niche or your goals. It can be easy to get caught up in the blogosphere and social media and forget why you are there. You could start out commenting on a post about increasing your subscribers and by the end of the day, evaluating the comedic value of lolcats.

Breaking it down like this also only helps if you realize you must set time aside for each one of these duties. But at least there are less here than you began with.

Related articles by Zemanta

I remember starting out with Twitter a few months ago. I had made fun of it up to that. Had no use for it. But then I read an interview of a blogger, can’t remember who know. And he said that joining Twitter was the best thing he ever did to promote his blog.

So I decided to give it a try. It took a while. The “What are you doing?” question is very deceptive. If all of your 140 character tweets answer this same question, you are missing out on some valuable uses: brain farts, things found online, blog post notices, pet peeves and the list goes on.

In a short time, I have gained a few followers. It is getting close to 800 now. Some days I would gain thirty. Some days one. And to tell you the truth, once I was in the hundreds, I don’t think there has been a day where I haven’t gained at least one new follower.

And this was all to introduce a tool that may help you find out how you gain your followers, SocialToo. In other words, to make those “30 new followers” days happen more often.

The site and the emails that it sends are pretty basic, but it does its job. You can choose the following options:

Automatically follow those that follow you.

Automatically unfollow those who unfollow you.

Get an email documenting those who followed and unfollowed you during the day and the last tweet you made.

Automatically direct message your new followers.

These are all set to yes by default. So if you join up, make sure you set everything up the way you want it. You may not want to automatically follow everyone or you may already use another service to direct message your new followers.

Here is an example email, mine, from yesterday:

Here is an example of the tweets I made right before I got new followers yesterday:

chungyen – last_tweet: Just saw an Adsense ad load in an Entrecard widget container. Not sure if it was my browser freaking out or someone hacking Entrecard.

<a
