Getting Closer to the Clouds

I decided to write a post about cloud computing, because I am using less and less of my own resources and more and more of what is freely and cheaply available on the internet. It saves time, money and space.

You may be using the cloud without knowing it. If you use webmail like Gmail, an App like Picnik, or host your blog at WordPress.com or Blogger, then you are using the lower levels of cloud computing. You are taking chores and storage and moving them from your computer to a place online where you can access them from any computer and as time goes on, from your phone also. I host my own blogs for the sake of control but I really on Gmail to hold all my database backups.

A Question of Semantics

A while ago I wrote a post questioning the issue of reblogging. Posts are often reblogged on meme tracking sites which use an algorithm to detect popular stories and ideas. Posts are also reblogged to blanket certain categories or markets. And then some are reblogged by people with made for Adsense sites or splogs.

My reason for covering the topic was to create a more complete picture of what I am trying to present with a post. I can’t cover everything and if I write a post about feeds, it would be nice to have the past research I did on the subject not only readily available to me while I write, but also for the readers who want to dig deeper into the subject.

Flash Where It Should Be Used

I have Flash turned off on my browser. I use Flock and have a few addons that I can’t live without. But it kept slowing down on me, so I trimmed a few things. I learned how to use about:config and turned off all Flash until I click the play button to start it. It wasn’t until then that I realized how many Flash ads are out there.

And some people build their whole sites out of Flash. If you’re a designer, photographer, or your site is only supposed to be a business card floating in the ether of the internets, Flash was probably a good choice, but if you expect your site to get read for content, look elsewhere.

How My Blog Got Hacked

About a week ago, Digital Products Review, a blog where I am slowly breaking down how I make money through Clickbank, got hacked by someone from Georgia. Not the state, the country. It seems to be a trend. The guy must have collected a bunch of sites that he could get into and then hit them all at once. I have been checking over the last week and there is never a shortage of new blogs, forums, and other sites that this guy hit.

Convert Just About Any File You Can Think of for Free

Media Convert

I have found other conversion tools online but most have limits on the size of the file you can can convert. And others only convert limited file types. After searching for a way to convert an Microsoft Access mdb file to a format I could import into Filemaker, I found this site. Easy. A 39 MB .mdb file converted to excel in about 15 minutes.
