Notes from BWE08: Making Money Online With A Blog

I guess this is a little late, but better late than never. It has been a chore trying to keep up lately and yes, I do actually have enough material for two weeks worth of posts from BWE. But a lot of these will be about new products and some will be based on sloppy but very complete notes I took at the sessions.

This was the first panel I attended at Blog World Expo and the speakers included John Chow, Brian Clark, Zac Johnson, Jim Kukral, Darren Rowse and Jeremy Shoemaker. Shoemoney was a little late and Jim Kukral had all of us in attendance tweet him that he sucked. Everyone laughed and some did. Hey, when do you get a chance to tell a top blogger he sucks.

MMO Blogs

My blog is number 53 on the top 100 Make Money Online blogs. It has hovered right that number for a while. Amazing, considering that I have neglected this blog a lot. The reason: I have other blogs and while this one talks of making money, it doesn’t really make money iteself. I wiped banners out here and went back to my roots in affiliate marketing, leaving this blog a journal of making money rather than a “buy this now so I can make money” blog.

Earn Up to $6 CPM with TinyMassive

We all know about shopping widgets: Auction Ads, Chitika, Widgetbucks. I had a couple on a few of my sites and took them off. They took up valuable screen space and gave me pennies a day. So why am I writing about a new shopping widget?

Because I think the creators of this widget have something. First, they own their own ecommerce business which gives them insight into buying activity. I run an ecommerce store at my day job and it has taught me more than any other business about the internet. Secondly, they are women, which gives them insight into shopping. Just joking, sort of.

Where I’ve Been Lately

I can be accused of reaching too far. I can also be accused of getting in over my head, at least for a few days at a time. But, if I had a choose between having a path laid out ahead of me or just taking steps forward like an explorer, not waiting for the rules or maps, I would choose the later.

I do like making money online. I just want it to be easier. The words that I can write at the various blogs and sites I own are only one part of the equation. The part that I will continue if I didn’t make any money.

The $7000 Show Must Go On Despite Alexa

In some freakish accident about 48 hours ago, the Alexa ranks were shuffled. As a result, my other blog now has a higher ranking with Alexa than this one.

I wondered how this would effect the Top 100 Make Money Online Blogs which Ryan Shamus painstakingly went through one by one and described recently. It’s well worth a look. As far as the list goes, I see a lot of same names, just in different places. I dropped about four places.

Also today would have been the day that Marcus Hochstadt’s Blog broke the Alexa 50,000 barrier. He was going to hold a contest to celebrate the occasion. Well, the contest is still on.

Lessons Learned at Low Paying Jobs

I didn’t quit a cush job to start making money online. I did it while I was making $12 anStreetcarStrikes hour and realized the ceiling was right around $16. I am a lazy person. I refuse to work that hard for that much pay. Of course, I couldn’t refuse right away. It took two years before my efforts here started paying bills. It took the same amount of time to realize it was possible.

Now I think it’s easy. Well, maybe not easy, but achievable. And that’s all I really need to know. Just one chard of light at the end of the tunnel.
