A Stumble Out of Nowhere

I recently downloaded RapidReader to test out how fast I could read some PDF files lying around on my desktop. One of the files I happened to choose was Web Traffic Orgasm, a book by Dean Hunt about getting stories on the front page of Digg.

I don’t use Digg that much, yet, but this PDF does have some good details about getting any post ranked higher on any type of page ranking system. I mention all of this because I think I absorbed the book by osmosis. I didn’t set out to get one of my pages stumbled, didn’t use this book as a guideline, but somehow I used a few of its tips without thinking about it or I just stumbled upon something.

A couple of days ago, I put together a list of bookmarking sites that do not use nofollow. I posted that list here. I also posted the exact same list with another headline over at Digital Products Review.

In Web Traffic Orgasm, one of the points that Dean Hunt makes is that you must package your potential post for global appeal and use terms that others would use. Obviously, people understand "link love" more than "do not use nofollow".

I also submitted the post to BloggingZoom. My first test of this system. Whether or not the stumble came via a visitor from BloggingZoom, I do not know.

By far, this stumble has given more hits to one page on one of my sites than any other. The next day I was greeted to being on the business buzz page of SU.

AGoodStumble

And I guess all the traffic from SU isn’t wasted. My subscriber count went from 29 to 55 that day. And I guess I will have to say I have been bitten by a new bug. Time to study this process more in depth

I’ve just changed the header for my Top Commenters section on Sciencebase after reading this post - It’s now headed “Post a Comment, Get Some Link Love”, which might attract a few more comments…we’ll see

I should do that to. Because right around the first of the month, when Top Commenters resets, I get a lot of queries with “Top Commenters” in it and then a rash of comments from spammers.
That would stop that and also give a better idea to new bloggers what that widget is all about.

We seem to have this happen quite frequent many reviews of Blogging Zoom have this same result. It seems the community has quite a few top Stumblers. Welcome to BZ and remember we are always here for support.

Stumble traffic is some of the easiest to get. I try to stumble at least one post a week, if the post is worthy.

Teasa,

Thanks. I have had a few other pages Stumbled, but not like this last one. What a difference a few words make.

Actually Dean got back to me and told me that was just a case study, a teaser. He is going to be releasing a full book soon. Can’t wait to see what that one will be.

I’ve been ignoring the use of stumble. But this post has challenged me to change my stance. Who doesn’t like traffic?

Well, I always knew that I could get traffic through SU but I didn’t want to do it for the sake of just traffic without any real activity. I didn’t think that many SU users would subscribe.

Yeah, SU is a curious thing. I personally am currently addicted to stumbling, and discovered a ton of interesting stuff that I would never in a million years found on my own.
The spikes in traffic due to Stumbling are quite interesting to observe. I find that most of them occur when your stumbled page gets (somehow) featured on the search result page.
But it’s not very easy to “get around” the Stumbleupon website, and search for info that you’d like to see. Other than that, I LOVE it :-)

for all INTERNET of New Age this born ample :to open the debates for the future ,how to be solved ethic all INTERNET without Big Brother remember
Old Will “That is the question”

As for instance I don`t like porn and atheist site …I like The church of JESUS CHRIST but I don`t like Mormon …If is not paradoxical that I am just fan of the StumbleUpon and I am to tremble with fear born a New Big Brother!

Congratulations on your accidental Stumble. I have found, out of all the social bookmarking sites, Stumble is my best resource for new readers and RSS subscribers. The results from this site are more significant than any other social bookmarking site I’ve used. Some have complained about a high bounce rate but I find that hasn’t been the case for me.

I think my biggest increase in subscribers has come through Entrecard, but Stumbleupon did the job that time.
